Some Ideas to Keep Learning on Vacation

Create Comics Have kids create a comic strip. This works on artistic creativity, humor, fine motor skills and writing skills. New technology does not always give children the ability to practice their hand/eye coordination and writing skills. Activities like these help children utilize their penmanship and fine motor skills in a fun way. Plan an Outdoor Outing Have your kids get online or use hiking books to create a Trip to Sleeping Giant. Set aside a half day, and have them work with you to plan the journey. Have them pick places to stop and write descriptions. Stop and look for signs of erosion and weathering. What types of rocks can you find and label? Collect some and then research the scientific names when you get home! Estimate how many miles you have hiked, how far you can see from the Castle and plan healthy lunches or snacks and drinks! Write a journal entry when you get home to reflect on your thought, observations and "I was Wonderings..." as well as some illustrations! Get Kids in the Kitchen Have your kids pick their favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner and teach them how to make the recipe. Choose something challenging but not overwhelming. Even simple staples, like spaghetti sauce, pancakes and lasagna can be used as a learning opportunity. The goal should be to make it on their own (with parent supervision if the stove or oven is involved). Then they can create a recipe box with all their favorite creations. When they write the recipe down, it encourages them to practice their handwriting in a fun way. Try doubling the recipe and having your child adjust all the fractions! Use the Computer There are some great sites to practice multiplication facts, research the lunar cycle or read up on a new, famous African American!

A WEEKLY Note from Mrs. Grabarz

As we enter Winter Weather, please make sure to send home the Emergency Closing Form with your child. This enables us to help know how to send them home in case of an emergency closing.

Please make sure your child has a healthful snack, like fruit, crackers and cheese or a granola bar. We do not eat until almost 1 PM, so they get very hungry during our morning together. A water bottle would also be wonderful! Please do not send in colorful drinks (like Gatorade) as they stain the carpet when spilled!

Thank you for sending in all the cans for our Food Drive! West Woods really cares for our less fortunate neighbors!!
